Ylistaro Marathon on May 25th, 2003: 3.28.4

After practicing quite conscientiously during the winter time I started my 12th maraton confidentially. The target was to keep 4.50 min/km time throughout the run and to rech 3 hours and 25 mins.

Ylistaro marathon was run on four laps, 10,55 km each, so the target was to run each lap at 51 minutes and 15 seconds. The running track was exremely flat, the altitude difference being only three meters.

I was able to keep my pace during the first lap but already at the second lap, the pace was a bit slower. Still I was able to maintain under 5 mins/km pace. At the end of third lap, I was still able to run under 5 mins/km although my muscles were already feeling tired.

During the 36. km the pace felt really to fast for me and I started to feel sharp pain on the left side of my stomach.  I had to walk twice to get rid of the pain and the consequence was that my km time was 5 mins 42 seconds. The last 6 kms went quite fine although I was not anymore able to run undet 5 mins/km (km time was varying between 5.12 and 5.24).

Finally I finished first time in my life under 3.30. Although I was not able to reach the target, I still was very pleased with the result.

Stockhom Marathon on Jun 9th, 2001: 3.57.46

Finally I was able to break 4 hour limit in marathon running. This happened in Stockholm.

I strated by running 5 mins 30 secs/km targeting 3.51 or so. This tactic succeeded up to 30 km mark. After that my pace slowered a bit and after 33 km a rain shower & thunder storm hit the area quite badly all the way until 39 km.

Anyway I an quite satistfied with my result. This gives me good basis on continuing practicing towards even better times.

I've already been for a long time quite fond of all types of sporting activities. Unfortunately I hadn't practiced systematically anything until August 1999. After having one of those frustrating running competitions with my friends, I said to one of my friend, Timo 'Umit' Sampolahti, that it would be nice one day to compete equally with them. Umit just asked my how much work I was ready to do for it.

That was really the beginning of my systematic practicing. First my goal was to run 10 km as fast as possible (which for me ment under 50 mins). Soon, as I was following Unit's training program (5 times a week), I noticed that I enjoyed most the long easy runs. After practicing for a month we decidecd that it was time to test for a longer run and in September we participated the famous Capital Run 1999 in Helsinki. The distance was 20 km.

I was quite surpriced to run 20 km under 2 hrs (1.56) and after a successful recovery, I finally was ready to set up my goal for a marathon. Finally Miia Pesonen from my work was thye only onw who participate me with the actual marathon practicing. We set up our goals to Stockholm Marathon on 3.6.2000.

Since September my training has gone pretty well. I participated Auckland Half Marathon on October 24th (time 1.59,52) and continue running one 20 km run a week. Surely, after three weeks of training, one needs a resting week, which doesn't mean total rest, but just shorter distances (50-70% of the previous week's distances).

I tend to run 50-60 km/week nowadays. Usually Mondays I rest, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I run about 10 km. One or two of the runs should be either hard ones or interval training. Fridays I rest and Saturdays run the week's long run, in December it is already about 25 kms. Sundays I do usually some cross training, meaning cross country skiing or padmington.

I hurt my leg and back in January 2000 and could nor practice for three weeks, then just when I was supposed to run 'the great test run' I had a flo for two weeks in May. Despite of my problems I was able to run the Stockholm Marathon on 3.6.2000. The final time was 4.47,07. I had no special goal for the end time, but surely I have to admit that I had something like 4hrs or 4:30 on my mind.

The first half went quite OK and the time was 2:11. I had lots of problems with my knees and with my right ankle after 23-25 km and had to slow down. In fact I 'skied without sticks' from 30 km onwards, but never walked. Miia finished with a superb time of 4:08 something.

Since Stockholm Marathon I've run Helsinki City Marathon in August (4.41), Vantaa Marathon in October (4.35) and the 4th marathon was on November 4th in Vammala, Finland (Rautavesi Marathon). I finished the marathon with a personal record (at that time) of 4.12,29 although there were also quite long and steep (at least steep for a normal marathon) uphills.

In 2001 I ran five marathons. Best marathons were in Stockholm in June (3.57.46) and in Vantaa in October (3.57.37). Besides marathons I have participated in various other events.

In 2002 I joined Tour Kaleva, a series of six separate competitions: 30 km skating in January, 70 km cross-country skiing in March, 42,2 km running in May, 50 km rowing in June, 105 km cyckling in Augist and 20-25 km orienteering in September. Also three of my friends, Pasi Peltola, Timo Sampolahti and Petri Nykänen joined the Tour as well. Together we form Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura’s team. The best maraton time was 3.32.28.

In 2003 I participated the Tour Kaleva again. Also during 2003 I participated Jukola orienteering relay, trekking (running & hiking) trip in Kungsleden in Norther Sweden and trekking trip to Nepal (Annapurna area). The best maraton time was 3.28.46.

Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura's performance at Jukola Orienteering Relay 1995 in Sipoo

ÄSS I: 987. position with time 22 hrs 8 minutes and 6 seconds

ÄSS II: 989. (and the last finished team) position with time 27 hrs 39 minutes and 43 seconds

ÄSS participated Jukola relay first time in 1992. The finish (and the time counting) was closed too early for the team to reach it within the time limit.

In 1993 ÄSS was already experienced and made it all the way to the finish. The final position was 982. out of 982 teams. ÄSS was 3 hrs slower than the second last team Ylistaron Alapään Nuorisoseura.

In 1994 ÄSS reached already 873. position but was still the last one. The time gap to the previous team was this time only 54 minutes.

In 1995 ÄSS continued to show evident progress. It was the first time ever ÄSS II reached the finish line and ÄSS I was the third last team. Raisu Lumous II competed strongly with ÄSS teams finishing between the two teams (just 31 minutes behind ÄSS I and five hours ahead of ÄSS II). ÄSS II was the first team ever in Jukola history to exceed the 24 hour limit. The official Jukola computer program was not prepared such times and started to count the time again from zero. The consequence of that was that ÄSS II was listed first for the final results list. According to the computer ÄSS II's time 3 hours 39 minutes was over double faster that the time of the original winner, NTHI I (from Norway with time 8 hours and 56 minutes).

I was invited to ÄSS team just two days before the relay and just before I left for a two-day boat trip to Stockholm. I had done only a little bit of orienteering some 15 years ago in my junior high school. I returned from Stockholm on the Saturday morning and in the same evening I left for my first ever Jukola. The only advice I got from my team mates was that the small black marks on the map are stones and the rest is irrelevant.

My personal stage time (at the third leg) was 8 hrs 21 minutes and 59 seconds and it is believed to be the slowest in the history of Jukola relay. But I found all the 22 control flags, didn't I.

ÄSS was better than ever before. Even the II team was able to beat someone. The aggregate time of both teams was under 24 hrs.

ÄSS I (18:06:56) was 958th, ÄSS II (18:32:03) was 961th out of 963 teams who finished the relay. Ylistaron Alapään Nuorisoseura II (20:06:31) and Taxi-Team (21:14:58) were the poor teams finishing behind ÄSS II. There were about 80 teams who started but could not finish their relay.

ÄSS II won 10 teams and ÄSS I won 3 teams. Also 119 teams were disqualified or did not finish the relay. The aggregated team time for the last team Seminaarimäen Mieslaulajat was 24 hrs 59 minutes and 54 seconds.

Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura at Jukola 1998 in Lohja-Siuntio

ÄSS I took back it's position within the internal ÄSS ranking by finishing to a marvelous 1048th place out of 1224 teams and about four hours ahead of ÄSS II. This year only 1113 teams managed to finish the relay. ÄSS II was placed in 1111th more than one hour ahead of Kärpät Fun Club and over 7 minutes ahead of 1. JK/Panssariprikaati.

At the ÄSS II team there were three newcomers at Jukola: Lauri Sihvonen (4th leg), Petri Nykänen (6th leg) and Juha Kokkonen (7th leg). Especially P.Nykänen surprised everybody else by finishing in 716th place at his leg.

My own leg went quite well until my ankle was twisted after the 7th control. I could not run any more after the incident and had to take a first-aid control before continuing. I walked the rest of my leg but managed to find all the controls in three and a half hours.

From last year's team ÄSS II lost Pekka Turpeinen back to NSV (Noin Seitsemän Veljestä, About Seven Brothers) and my brother Petri Nummela to Tukkisiat (Logpigs). NSV managed to finish well ahead of ÄSS II although NSV's last runner came out from the forest about 45 minutes after the finish was closed.

Tukkisiat had six newcomers and was 'ranked' as a most probeble team to take the last place. They would have gained the place if the third leg runner had found all the controls. He was 7 hours 45 minutes at his leg but could not find three controls.

Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura at Jukola 1999 in Eurajoki

Once again there was a thrilling competition between the two ÄSS teams. ÄSS II was leading until the competition broke down when the fifth runner of ÄSS I did not find all the controls and the team was disqualified.

ÄSS II finished finally 1097th out of 1108 teams that managed to finish the relay. At the beginning there were altogether 1226 teams to start the race, so ÄSS II beat 129 teams, including last year's winner Halden SK from Norway.

This time the legendary second team of ÄSS had three newcomers, namely Lauri Jäntti (4th leg), Petri Seppä (5th leg) and Marcus Olaleye (6th leg). This year's definite speciality was that nobody positioned last at his own stage.

Former ÄSS runner, and my dear brother, Petri Nummela led Tukkisiat this time all the way to the end and the team finished to the last (1108.) position (with time 24hrs, 35 mins) just 2 hours behind the second last team, Erräät Oppaat.

This year I managed to get two ladies to ÄSS II's Venla team, namely Miia Pesonen and Mari Hujanen. ÄSS II finished to the last position (649th) with time 10 hrs and 26 mins. The second last team, Riihimäen Suunnistajat III, was two hours quicker.

Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura at Jukola 2000 in Liperi

In Liperi ÄSS had two Jukola teams and one Venla team. The Venla team broke all the records by beating Äänekoski's main orienteering team Rasti E4. This all came true, when one of the ÄSS runners hurt her ankle and the team was able to get one of Team France's jurior runner to the first leg. Also Tiina Inkala from Sonera run Jukola classic (first leg in her own team and the last leg in ÄSS).

I had the honor to start ÄSS II's relay. I followed mostly the 'not-so-long' queues in the woods and got lost every time I was alone. Once again: orienteering and map reading abilities would have been a great help.

ÄSS II finished 958. out of 959 finished teams. We beat Reilut Miehet Havumetsien (former Ylistaron Alapään Nuorisoseura> by 27 minutes. ÄSS I seems to me already quite a professional team finishing this time to the 900th position.

Äänekosken Sarjakuvaseura at Jukola 2001 in Jurva

Also this time ÄSS had two Jukola teams and one Venla team. The Venla team cold not win Rasti E4 1 but succeeded in winning Rasti E4 2 by one position.

ÄSS I was close to hit inside 1000. teams but was finally positioned to 1001. ÄSS II broke lots of recordes. Timo Hämynen (5 th leg) was the quickest ÄSS II ever by 1.17. Also the aggregated time 17 hhs 24 mins and 49 secs was the best ever in ÄSS II.

I was at the 7th leg and managed to follow one 'train' throughout the leg. I didn't have to find ANY controls myself and I even didn't have much time to read my map since I had to concentrate on every step in order not to twist my ankle and to stey in the train.

My leg time 2.25.47 was the best ever for me and it was only 1,797 times the quickest time at that leg (1.21). I left behind 327 runners at my leg, which must be more that cumulatively during 1995-2000. So this time it was more running than orienteering for me.

Marcus Olaleye was the first person to run two legs in a same team as he took both the 1st and 4th leg. He had a most dramatic first leg by countering a dying runner. Marcus used his GSM and dialled the emergency number. Unfortunately nothing could be done and the runner passed away.

Extreme Trekking

I participated on extreme hiking in Swedish Lappland (Nikkaluokta - Kebnekaise - Signi - Sälka - Unna Räita - Vistas - Nikkaluokta) 2.-8.7.2000 along with Timo "Umit" Sampolahti. We hiked about a half and ran about a half. Our backpacks weighted abt. 10 kg/each, so the running was possible (compared to normal hiking, where you may have more than 25 kg to carry).

Altogether our hiking was 120 km, and my calorie consumption was 11 860 kcal. This compares to 170 km of running (approximately my normal three week's practice>.

In 2001 the hiking trip was made between June 30th and July 5th. Also this time the wether was a bit bad and we cound'l climb too high. Intead, we run more than last year. The total distance was about the same than last year, but I run 62 kms altogether.

This time the route was: Nikkaluokta-Tarfala-Kebnekaise-Signi-Sälka-Nallu-Vistas-Nikkaluokta.

There will be a Mountain Trail Running Experience -competition in summer 2002 (Abisko-Abiskojaure-Alesjaure-Tjäktja-Sälka-Signi-Kebnekaise) held by myself and Umit. This competition is ment to be for non-professionals and teams of two will be randomly picked for each stage. An other possibilitiy is to have the event in Sarek national park, just south of Kebnekaise. If you are interested, please contact me for further information.
