Black Russian Terrier

HISTORY

The Black Russian Terrier was created by the selected breeding of Airedales, Giant Schnauzers, and Rotweilers.
A military kennel
in Russia
is responsible for the creation of this breed in the 1930's. It was intended to be part of the military forces. This breed needed to be large and trainable for many situations, including harsh Russian winters. The breed was accepted by the FCI in 1984.

Appearance
The black Russian terrier should be a large, robust, powerful dog with powerful muscles. Female black Russian terriers have to appear feminine, but not lack all the same stature as the males. Male dogs should be 66 - 72 cm. Bitches  64 - 70 cm. The hair is rough, hard, ample and extremely dense and covers the entire body.
The coat must be trimmed. Acceptable colours are black or black with grey hairs.

Temperament
The black Russian terrier should be calm, confident, brave, and self-assured, with an aloofness toward strangers. They are very intelligent and very reliable.
They are great guard dogs, and should have a good temperament with great courage, endurance and strength.
