Burned three times

This house is in the sixth district of Pori. Sixth district is located near the centre of Pori and is one of Pori’s well preserved areas with wooden houses. This house was built in the beginning of the 20th century but it has been decorated several times.
First tragedy occured in the summer of 2002 when a 25 year old man deliberately tried to burn down this house. Two lives were lost and the perpetrator was found guilty for arson and sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment.
After restoration there were nine separate apartments in this house.
On a snowy January night in 2006 misfortune struck again. This time flames were already burning the roof by the time that fire department arrived to the scene. Luckily no one was hurt.
This time crime was not suspected.
Peace was not to be however. Already in the next night the sirens broke the silence once again. This time the house was burned beyond repair.
Some say it was fire that had been left smoldering, some say that evil prevailed… It seems we will never know. At the moment the house waits for demolition.
I have been in this house. There is something wrong there. Something in the air, in the building itself…
And it is not just smoke.

butchery

The Butchery

From 1902 to 1905 there was a creamery here. In 1922 the area was leased to a livestock company which became a cooperative butchery in 1937. In 1952 a red brick production facility was finished. Compared to other buildings it was massive.
Production was diversified to Tampere - a major city in Central Finland in 1972. Successful years became to an end after a major fusion in 1993 and butchery industry in Karjaranta, Pori slowly died down.
After discontinuance of the butchery industry this building has been used for very different purposes compared to the original one.  It has been one of the venues for Pori Jazz Festivals for instance. One of the visiting saxophone-players has been heard telling a story of  hearing distant screams of animals while rehearsing here.
Satakunta museum requested for the preservation of these historically important buildings but the protests were ever heard and the current owner was permitted to tear down all eleven buildings in 2003. In the future there will be multi-family houses for approximately 500 quarters here.

shed

The Shed

After traditional farming was superseded by modern agriculture the sheds became useless and were often left on the mercy of harsh Finnish weather. They can nowadays still be found beside most fields. Usually dry standing or slowly mouldering they remind us of different times.
